237 Madison:

Micro Living

New York City

Andrée Putman’s classic Morgan Hotel has been re-imagined as floors of ultra-micro-apartments. The micro challenge – “living small is living well” - is the perfect accommodation of program (sleeping, eating, and living) with a sense of spaciousness, and a genuine working flexibility. A tight composition of low-tech built-ins, including a full kitchen and flip-down or pull-out drawer-style beds is contrasted with a leggy steel armature that supports moveable furniture elements. A sofa, a fold and swing dining table, a moveable cocktail table, a display ledge, a bench, steam trunk-style drawers, storage cabinets, and movable adjustable light fixtures plug-in and snap on to a structure of steel poles and spars. To increase the perception of space, mirrors are strategically placed to extend the space at the kitchen backsplash, and to bounce sunlight into the room while reflecting a piece of the street into the space at the windows jambs. Finally, the window wall has a solar shade that doubles as a projection screen for video or photographs.

…there is one thing that deeply shocks me – American closets. I cannot believe one can dress well when you have so much. – ANDRÉE PUTMAN
